Laura: How to Fix an Impersonal Main Character

Holes in a story can be difficult to pinpoint and even more difficult to properly “fix.” Laura, the film noir classic from Otto Preminger, suffers from a cold and impersonal Main Character. As a result, the audience has a hard time finding some sort of personal connection with the story. Luckily, the Dramatica theory of story provides some insight on why this is, and suggests a way to fix it.

Children of Men - One SheetIn Children of Men, rich thematic elements of hope play out against despair in a dystopian vision of the future. Many have commented that while they found the film highly entertaining, they felt cheated at the end. They often go on to complain that the movie was half-finished. I disagree. I would say it was 3/4 finished…
