Many of the articles on this site can be organized according to the specific parts of story structure they investigate. The three major categories are listed below.
Beyond simply Protagonist and Antagonist, the concepts of Character cover a wide range of structural and dynamic appreciations found in a complete story. In addition, you'll find the most intimate and personal aspects of story in this section. The Main Character is the audience's way into a work of narrative fiction. Learning the different techniques and tools of this most important throughline should be job one for the creative writer.
And lastly, if it can't be classified under Character, Plot or Theme, it will end up here. These concepts or ideas, while sitting outside of the actual structure of a particular story, have an important relationship to writing and understanding meaningful stories.
I'm sure you've heard that Plot is the order in which things occur. Well, that certainly is a good start for explaining this particular area of story structure, but the specific structural and dynamic aspects of Plot encompass so much more. Meaningful Endings. Limits that frame the argument of a story. Each of these concepts helps to create the framework that carries the message of narrative fiction.
In short, the concepts of Theme provide the measuring stick for evaluating the Author's argument. But they also help to provide the overall feeling of a complete story. While it would be more accurate to classify some of these concepts under Genre, for the purposes of this site and a general introduction to story structure, their presence within this category is more appropriate.
