steadfast kids

On the way in today I was thinking about why most popular kid’s stories have Steadfast Main Characters. Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory (the original movie), Beauty and the Beast, Mulan, The Little Mermaid - they all have Main Characters who manage to change the minds of their Impact Characters (usually a parent - more often than not, a father (or father figure!)). To a certain extent, even the classic, The Little Engine That Could has a steadfast main character in it.

Is it that when you’re a child you need to know that you have some strength, some kind of power to change the world around you?

Sure. Just consider the experience of a child: while under the (to them) apparently arbitrary control of adults, they struggle along, learning and discovering. Persistance is an important trait for a child.
